FEAR may be the worst enemy of the human species or our BEST Friend. And it’s been with us since the beginning of time. Every ancient major religious text writes about it and the damage it causes. It is fear that will turn your dream of success into an ugly nightmare that haunts you into the paralysis of anal-ysis OR Fuels your imagination, Desires and goals. I had the privilege of being present at the post gold medal celebration when Olympic Gold Medalist Natalie Cook said this;

It’s the same fear that lost me the gold medal at the 96′ Atlanta Olympics, that won me the Gold medal at the Sydney Olympics. I found a way to manage my fear to drive me forward instead of hold me back“.

Most children are pretty fearless creatures – we watch as our 5YO jumps off things, dives head first after a ball or climbs up a stack of shelves or other things we would never consider. Teenagers and even young adults continue to display mostly fearless attitudes. Remember how invincible you were as a young person?

In a bizarre cruel twist, many people grow more fearful, as they age. I say bizarre because wisdom (which usually comes with age) should make us more apt to see the Truth in a situation. Unfortunately many people attach incorrect meanings to events.

Becasue the Truth is – fear can be defeated and converted to fuel because ALL fear is just a learned response. We are born with only 3 fears; fear of abandonment, fear of loud noises, and fear of falling. And the last two we learned from mom’s reaction to outside stimuli. Every other fear you have today was/is learned! And if you’re still above ground you can learn a new response, you can un-learn your fears in one of two ways;

The antidotes to fear are Gratitude and Action. Grateful that you have the fear because it in some way it served you. And from a place of gratitude you can transform the fear into fuel.

And the very best way to defeat fear is through Action. DO the thing you fear and attach a new meaning to it. Very often we find; “Gee that wasn’t so bad afterall“. Re-member, you’ve done it before.

And finally from the movie Lion King; Raficki the wise one said this in response to the future king of all expressing his fear of leadership:

You can either run from it or Learn from it.”

When you’re launching a startup, one of your first tasks is to identify potential customers and learn about their needs.

This may seem very different from the goals I have described in previous columns about defining your business’s greater purpose and helping to tackle some of the big problems our society faces today, but in fact they are related. Getting involved in volunteer efforts may help you to find customers and grow a business with deep roots in the community, which may be integral to its long-term success.

When my friends and I were starting up Virgin Records in the early 1970s, we backed a student advisory center in London close to our headquarters, which provided guidance for young people on everything from dealing with depression to getting a job. This may not have led directly to record sales, but our work there did help us to keep in touch with our audience’s concerns and the problems they faced at a time when the culture was changing very quickly.

Over the years, businesses in the Virgin Group have taken part in a number of local projects, though ”local” now means close to our offices, stores and other locations around the world. Experience has taught us that during our Virgin Records days, we might also have looked at lending some of our equipment, manpower and other resources to local school music programs and other music-focused community groups.

What ideas can you think of for your business? Are there groups in your community in need of support, perhaps in terms of mentorship or equipment? Are there skills you could offer to teach? How would your team like to get involved? Just a few hours a month can make a big difference in people’s lives and help with your company’s development.

The point of such activities is not to make money — although, often times this can be an indirect result. Through the relationships you build by doing such work, your business will become a hub for the community, supporting and fostering the people around it. It will help you to build a stronger culture within your company, better relationships with your customers and staff, and ultimately a more successful business.

Good Morning Team – Each of us is an experiment of one. The facts are clear.

Fact One: Thanks to modern farming techniques – in general – today’s fruits and vegetables have much less nutritional content than the same foods we ate just 20 years ago. Estimates range from one tenth to one twentieth. Meaning the saying is now, “10 20 apples a day keeps the doctor away.” So if we are going to “try” to get our nutrition from food we’re going to have to eat a lot more than the “recommended” amounts in order to obtain proper levels of nutrition.

“Uncle Sam” recommends 3 cups of fruits and veggies per day. Dr Oz recommends 12-15 servings of both per day and Dr Cooper says; “5 is fine, 9 is divine“. (servings) (A serving is generally more than a cup)

Now I’ve worked from home for 14+ years and I’ve learned how to get to 5-9 servings pretty efficiently. Yet for me, 12-15 seems like having a full time job of preparing and eating fruits & vegetables. And for people who work outside the home…research shows the average adult gets 3 servings per day we can extrapolate that they’re just not making the time to eat right.

Therefore it makes “common sense” that we all must take a well balanced nutritional supplement.

Fact Two: Not all supplements are created equal. There are roughly 1600 nutrition companies making products for humans. And just because a product is popular, well advertised, “cheap” or “expensive” …doesn’t mean it’s good….or bad.

Now the maddening part. Even when one has access to actual research papers and side notes….rarely does one find specifically what fruits or veggies were used in a particular study, where they were grown, what their actual nutritional content was, if there were any pesticide or fertilizer residues on them when they were eaten etc etc.

And when it comes to studies on specific supplements like Vit A, C, E and so forth – rarely do the papers even mention what brand was used, was it a “standardized” product, were they natural or synthetic, were they stored at proper temperatures, taken with or without food, etc etc.

My point; now you begin to understand why CNN can report this week that product X will keep you alive forever and next week they’ll report that product X causes instant cancer.

So we are left with each of us being an “experiment of one”. What works for one person may or may not work for another. Your Health is your first Wealth and it is your “Response-Ability”
